Good video on fasting

Came across this video on fasting - probably one of the most informative ones I've seen. It also points out why fasting is better than low carb diets just to lose weight in general as well (insulin resistance/sensitivity etc.). Low carb diets lower BMR while fasting does not basically allowing you to keep weight off in the long run (around 40 minute mark).

he also has a podcast 'fasting talk' like 30+ episodes listened to before i fast.

i have semi beef with him though cuz he's booked up for 2+ years to do a medically supervised fast lol. here in toronto.

Welcome to Canada @Jacknap!!

So you did find someone that does medical fasting (albeit not at an effective time).

Good video tho @Tubzy. I may check out his other series that Jacknap mentioned.

Nice video! Watching now.

I said the same thing before... fasting good if you have higher body fat %... not if ultra lean already!

BTW he reminds me of; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbn2wPye4Vk

Yes, Dr Fung is defintely one of the top docs for fasting. Did a lot of research on his stuff, he really knows what he is talking about and goes over all the research.

This one is much better, more technical with some pretty cool examples (like the show the biggest loser)

Haha wow. Yeah he is based in Canada, I'm personally not a fan of supervised fasts LOL I can see that more for diabetics and older people though

The one in Cali is like 2 grand just to go there and sit "supervised" LOL

I am in week 6 of my 8 week Breuss fast, I don't think supervision is needed unless you are deathly ill. I am finding this fast very easy, much easier then shorter ones.

I wonder how difficult it would be to set that up as a business. seems like easy money.

yeah I'd way rather do it at comfort of my own home. Though I ran low on electrolytes during mine on like the 8th day. I've been having weird heart pains too. Probably unrelated but it can be dangerous for some. eg) fast oxidizers according to gbold

You are a menace Orion I can't believe you are still at it!

I think supervised is a little crazy unless you don't have a budget. I was fine during the 21 days of breuss/water and I really pushed the limit sometimes with saunas and Rife. I was weak though and didn't want to do much- getting up and going wasn't easy, but being at a desk was fine

9th day post fast here- 3 areas where improvement has been really remarkable: fatigue issues (my biggest weakness improving substantially), digestion/transit time (once every 2 days and chronic hard constipation to twice a day at least with healthy looking stools), and a complete elimination of all noticeable food allergies (no sniffles at all ever since fast after eating anything and I cheated bad this past Sunday). I've had the food allergies bad all of PFS.

Remember, I was doing probiotic enemas nearly nightly during the fast so its very possible these very much helped my digestive health.

Fasting is such a great tool. Currently I'm doing a full day of nothing but juice and broth. Probably 100 oz juice, 16 oz of broth. Think its great to give the digestive system a good 36 hour break once a week.

That is one great benefit I have noticed from this longer fast, much easy breathing through my nostrils, especially most nights now while sleeping, smelling much better. Used to have runny nose all the time, stuffed up completely from sleeping and sneezing lots.

Another thing he emphasized was how the super low insulin levels help reset and sensitize them again, just like gbolduev said.

I try to use high quality water with electrolytes with mine and add sea salt too it.

And it also shows why breaking a fast with pure juices like fruit or vegetable could be bad due to high amount of fructose which would spike insulin very high very fast, which could ruin many of your gains from the fast..lemon egg rice soup FTW

you used sea salt during your fast? didn't know that fuck wish I knew.

I know they use distilled though at true north so didn't think i would run into issues using reverse osmosis.

With veggies too? But then what's about a Breuss fast? It has beetroot!
And is fructose spiking insulin? I thought it was only glucose! Rice should spike insulin more than veggies.

I am struggling with understanding the precise difference between calorie restriction and intermittent fasting. When you do intermittent fasting such as eating once per day or something (like Jason Fung from the videos claims he does), how do you not end up eating less calories?

Is the main difference the time between intake of calories so that even though you decrease calories when doing intermittent fasting your baseline metabolism doesn't decrease because insulin goes down? Or what is it that makes sure your baseline metabolism does not decrease on intermittent fasting vs caloric restriction?

I find it really hard to keep calories high (above 1500 kcal) when eating just one meal a day. I still get cold hands sometimes but I compensate with more exercise and sauna which helps me sweat and keep temperature up. I just want to understand why IF would not lower basal metabolic rate like Jason Fung claims.. maybe I am missing a key link here. mattyb do you think you could help me understand this? :)

Maybe a question of putting it in words? Intermittent fasting means you fast sometimes during the day, with a chosen window for eating. Ramadan would be intermittent fasting!
Calorie restriction would mean that you reduce calories, but still get them in the common window of more than 12 hours per day.
And then it does not mean that IF has no calorie restriction. It might have, according to the time window you decide for eating.

As many claims, are they true for everybody? or just for the claimer + some similar persons to him?
IF seems to not suit fast oxidizers much more than fasting, if I remember well...

Yeah so I suppose if you were able to cram all the calories for the day into one meal it would make sense. It just think there is a great "risk" that it turns into caloric restriction since it is harder to get the same amount of calories in one meal as opposed to three meals. Not saying it is bad, just trying to understand the difference between this and eating less calories overall.. Maybe insulin is the main point? But insulin would also lower/normalize under caloric restriction would it not?

The"risk" is also to go over digestive possibilities? Peat would also tell you that eating less would put you in hypo-T, ready for hibernating!
I prefer solutions to either eat or fast, and not in between, but this is me, and me now....
For IF, I would reduce the window very slowly and according to appetite. I would not wait in the morning when hunger shows up. Also, for a slow 1, the lab told me to eat all through the day to maintain energy.

Jason Fung talks out of his ass a lot of the time. No evidence IF doesn't lower BMR. Anything that causes weight loss will lower BMR, because BMR is ultimately a function of systemic metabolism, and the more tissues you have the higher the systemic metabolism. It may not lower BMR as much per unit of lean body mass tissue, but again, it lacks evidence for that.

IF can mess with the measurements of BMR if taken too late in the day, because it increases adrenergic response, which covers true resting metabolic rate. I have seen this happen in myself. I had to fast until 4PM one day for a BMR test when I was in school, my resting BMR was +500kcal above predicted and I was wired and jittery at the time. That's because BMR tests are supposed to be taken in the early morning, when you get a true view of metabolism.

If you don't have fat to lose, but still want to try out IF, just make a bigger eating window. One meal a day is ridiculously hard, I have tried it many times - you will lose weight with that. Try three meals a day inside an 8 hour eating window. Much easier to maintain weight with that.

Thank for the comments, Matty! My main reasons for fasting are to chelate toxic metals (copper, heavy metals etc) and to solve digestive issues..it is definitely NOT to lose weight as I am already slightly underweight (very visible abs and around 68 kg at 177 cm tall) .. I have many of the issues described by Herrfish in the UC/IDB thread and also want to use fasting to promote mitochondrial fusion as you have argued it might.

I will try and expand the feeding window or simply do some 1 or 2 day fasts and eat normally in between..
