Improving bile flow and bile production

Found a really interesting article here on ways to improve bile flow and increase bile production. This seems to be a real issue for a lot of people, and it's got to be a real issue for me. This seems to overlap with liver flushes a bit, but some interesting things mentioned;

Top 10 Ways to Improve Bile Flow and Bile Production
1. Turmeric
Perhaps the most well-studied herb for the increased production and delivery of bile is turmeric. In one study, just 40mg of the extract of turmeric increased the contraction of the gallbladder by 50%. (3)

Note: Turmeric is high in oxalic acid which, in excess, can precipitate as gallstones. If you are sensitive to oxalate, you may want to avoid turmeric, although the science is not totally clear here. In one study, curcumin was found to significantly reduce oxalic acid levels when study participants were fed a high oxalate, gallstone-promoting diet. (4)

2. Fish Oils
Fish oils were evaluated in a controlled study on their ability to reduce oxalic acid levels in the urine. Supplementation with (EPA) eicosapentaenoic acid and (DHA) docosahexaenoic acid was compared with a standardized control diet. The fish oils significantly lowered oxalic acid levels in the blood. (5,6)

3. Beets
Eat one red beet per day. Beets have natural nitrates that open up bile ducts and increase bile flow. Studies suggest that beets can increase the liver production of detox enzymes like glutathione and decongest an ischemic liver. (7)

4. RE-hydration
  • Hot Sips: Sip 2-3 sips of plain tea hot water every 15-20 minutes throughout the day for two weeks.
  • Drink half your ideal body weight in ounces of purified room temperature water each day.
5. Apples
Eat 1-2 apples a day. Apples are high in malic acid, which naturally opens bile ducts and allows bile to flow. Apples are also shown to increase the elimination of bile acids into the toilet, more effectively detoxifying the body and forcing the liver to manufacture new bile. (8)

6. Fiber
Soluble fiber attaches to toxic bile and takes it to the toilet, forcing the liver to manufacture fresh bile. Eat more:

  • Chia
  • Flax
  • Pumpkin
  • Hemp
  • Slippery elm, marshmallow root and licorice
  • Roughage like leafy greens
  • Root veggies
  • Apple pectin and celery contain insoluble fiber, which sweeps the intestines of toxins. (8)
7. Lemons
Lemons reduce uric acid levels and increase bile flow. Try to consume the juice of 1 lemon per day. (9)

8. Lemon Juice + Olive Oil
Take 1-2 tsp of lemon juice and 1-2 tbsp of extra-virgin organic small farm olive oil together before bed for a month.

9. Ghee
Adding 1-2 tsp of ghee in the diet per day is a great way encourage bile flow, better intestinal health and gallbladder contraction. When doing one of our LifeSpa kitchari cleanses, start with just 2 tsp of ghee each day and only increase the dose if the previous dose was comfortable. This is for those without a gallbladder or those who are having gallbladder issues. Ghee has been shown in numerous studies to support an effective detox of the liver. (10)

10. Protect the Intestinal Skin
Whole, unprocessed foods are key. Herbs like Amalaki, Brahmi Brain (Centella asiatica) and Neem are my favorite herbs to support the health of the intestinal skin.

Colonizing probiotics are also an important component of protecting the intestinal skin and sending balancing signals to the liver and gallbladder to produce and deliver bile.

The article has links to studies at the bottom of the list.

Things I've found which seem to work/not work for bile flow are;

- Artichoke - Seems to be do absolutely nothing for me, tried various brands
- Milk Thistle - Again, don't notice anything
- Dandilion root - also nothing
- TUDCA/UDCA - effective - TUDCA a bit more so than UDCA
- Tribulus - definitely very effective when using a decent brand. Only issue is whenever I stop using it after having been using it for a while I seem to get terrible headaches - almost like a mini crash
- Apples - Surprisingly this seems effective for me. I've been eating an apple after my meals as it seemed to help bile flow (searching along these lines is how I found the above)

Tempted to try just taking olive oil and lemon juice before bed for a time and see how I get on with that. Almost like a mini liver flush, but without the bucket load of epsom salts the next morning (I'm still not absolutely sure how much of an important part of the flush this is. Obviously it's a laxative, so I'm not sure if it's just so that you can 'see' results of the liver flush? i.e. the stones, or if it's to relax the bile ducts - however seeing as you're taking it the morning after the oil there wouldn't be bile being secreted from the liver I don't think, as you're not consuming fat at that point)

The ghee suggestion is interesting too- not sure if anyone has tried this? According to the study it activates p450 enzymes in the liver, so increases detox of toxins

this is why malic acid is so good,( in apples) it increases NADPH. which makes bile

Fin binds NADPH and lowers it. so stops bile flow.

that is why it is part of the electrolytes protocol.

Thanks man. Would be great.

Maybe i can get to specialist here in germany who offers a shockwave therapy (Extrakorporale Stoßwellenlithotripsie). They wont remove the gallbladder but destroy the stone inside of it. That is my PLAN B but it depends on the stone..

Would acetic acid in apple cider vinegar have a similar effect as malic?

Maybe it can. I don t know. It seems my stone is way too big for the flushes.

You should try and increase bile flow, and then maybe get an ultrasound to see if they've reduced in size. It sounds like poor bile flow is often the cause of the gallstones.

Some potential remedies here to dissolve them, including a plant based compound called Rowachol which is apparently quite effective. Once they're small enough do some liver flushes

Well i tried many herbs and addition ox bile (UDCA) + liverflushes + malic acid about one year... and i did a ultrasound test after a 3/4 year and there was not really an effect.

Also tried black raddish but on this stuff i got insane bile flow reactions...

Just reading this about bile flow (and interestingly studies showing how fenugreek is used for better bile flow?)

This suggests a strong link between better bile flow that is supported by fenugreek and the muscle strength, libido, sexual function, belly fat-burning, and more lean body composition mentioned above.

First time I've read about a direct link between impaired bile flow, and a knock-on effect of poor libido, sexual function etc..

fenugreek is one of the things which helps POIS, we have been using it for years on poiscenter.com

But isn't it a fairly powerful 5AR inhibitor? I've read of some people potentially getting PFS from it

I bought some ox bile capsules from Nutricology and they seem to be helping a lot. I almost think I've found the answer to my problems. However, the capsules are 500 mg and many people write that they get violent diarrhoea from one capsule, while I can take 3 capsules three times a day without any effect on bowel movements. This is a little scary, what's happening here? Also I tried to not take them one morning and I got intense anxiety and felt absolutely dried out until I took them again. Help!
