Hi Guys -

I am going to go ahead and apologize in advance for two things: a) the length of this post and b) there will be a point in this post that I believe everyone reading this will think, "you effing dumbass, why would you do that to yourself, it is a slap in the face to those still recovering" but please bear with me. I'm quite curious to the response from some of the more "in the know" guys like @gbolduev @TubZy @Cdsnuts and if my theory on the matter is correct.

Anyways, here we go. To set the stage, I wanted to provide a bit of background on my situation (I do have another thread out there but it isn't as thorough as I'd like it to be). Took Propecia for about 3 years, adding Rogaine about 2.5 years in. I was a good responder to both and was going about my happy little life. Granted my dick was probably a little smaller than what it was pre-supplements, semen a bit more watery, and my body mass was slightly smaller (weighting about 205 for a 6'2'' individual; where pre- supplements I was about 210)but I could live with that. Even more of an added benefit was that my body hair was reducing and let me tell ya, I've got a lot to give (not joking, I might eventually talk to the hair doctor about a body hair transplant). So come end of 2016 I got sick and the doctor gave me a 7 day steroid and that is what put me over a downward spiral. From that day forward, I felt like something was off - you all unfortunately know what I am talking about - waking up every hour on the hour, gasping for breath; feeling like you're not really living live almost like you're in a simulation; the ringing of the ears; lack of hunger; lack of sexual desire; pain between the dick and the butt; brain fog; digestive issues; inability to complete or construct a sentence; lack of sweating; etc. So that was about January 2017 and it took me until March to figure out what was going on. That is when I found TotalMaleOptimization and I got on the plan almost immediately and I felt good knowing that I was doing something.

Throughout the summer and into the fall, I was feeling really good - keeping a food log, exercise journal, etc. I noticed my body was getting better, feeling more human, sleeping better, gains at the gym, etc. However, I knew I was not at pre-finasteride stage because I wasn't sweating when I was working out nor was I getting the itch or hair loss (which, to be completely honest wasn't terrible). Also, I was basically completing 30 days of no-fap at a time only jerking off or having sex with the gf to see if there was any change in semen quality (which there wasn't a ton). So come late November, I went to an eye doctor and he said I had some inflammation of the eye and put me on another round of steroids (this is the first, "you effing idiot moment" and I'm starting to wonder if this is what put me in the original PFS state; or worked in conjunction with the finasteride and minoxidil more so the later) and this is where thinks went south for a long time. My weight slowly started creeping up from 205lbs to about 215lbs and working out started to become an issue. I felt like I was winded all the time and not getting the pump that I did from June-October. Dissapointed, I still continued @Cdsnuts herb rotation and tried powering through it.

By January of 2018 I started to see some changes, both good and bad. First, I could tell the herbs were definitely working. I started sweating a lot more, was getting acne across the nose and cheeks, the face was super oily and the body hair was growing in full force, shit you not my nose hairs now grow like 1 inch long (use a trimmer almost on a daily basis). I was also sleeping better, had more focus at work, and noticed my hair was falling out. Additionally, my dick was as hard as it had ever been and even though I was participating in no-fap, I had recently jerked off to see if there was a change in consistency from the PFS stage and there definitely was. However, I was still lacking at the gym - not really getting any pump or feeling like my muscles were firing like they were in the summer and fall. Additionally, my body weight sky-rocketed to 223lbs. I had a ton more mass (I don't want to necessarily call it fat or muscle) across my neck, chest, arms, belly, and legs (the inner thighs are bare from hair due to the constant rubbing) and my close were all fitting more snug - even with the paleo diet (remember I am tracking weight and food on a daily basis). Furthermore, I could tell something was going on because I had to move the watch band to a larger hole to get around my wrist. So that leads me to the second "you effing idiot moment".

Some of you might be aware of my post yesterday, in which I talked about my brother having issues with Minoxidil after one use and I started hypothesizing on some of the issues that I was having based on a couple of the response that I saw from yesterday's post and my recent experiences, which I'll get to in a moment. But first, I'll give you the final "you effing idiot moment". So last night, after work and spending all day considering something really dumb, I decided to apply Minoxidil to see if my theories would pan out - I had an old bottle from back in the day and I applied it at about 7:00PM last night. So where does that leave us, well I can tell you I am still affected by the drug. Last night, I did not sleep well - woke up 2-3 times around mid night, 3, and 5. I had to pee a lot each time I woke up and had that tightness between the butt and dick. Brain function is still fine, it really is, I actually feel quite normal; but my dick is definitely smaller and my ejaculation volume and consistency resorted back to the old ways. So that is all the bad news. Here is the weird and what I'll classify as "good" news. The additional weight that I was carrying around is gone. My legs, abs, arms, neck, etc all look lean and defined again. I dropped 6 lbs overnight. I kid you not, I went from 219lbs yesterday at 5:30 AM to 213lbs this morning. My clothes fit again, a pair of work pants that I couldn't get into in January fit really well this morning. I don't feel like I have the bowling ball in my mid-section anymore and running does not hurt my knee joints. Additionally, my scalp doesn't itch at all and when I showered this morning I lost maybe 5 hairs.

As you can see I am in quite the juxtaposition. I obviously know that my body isn't 100% and that I have androgen receptor issues - the little experiment proved that out. But now I am at a loss about what to think of my joints and weight being much better. That started making me think that this was a result of one of two things.

A) Could it have been possible that during the later stages of recover, my body was producing too much testosterone (hence a large conversion to DHT - when I noticed the uptick in acne, penile growth, body hair, and loss of hair on head, itch, etc) that was converting not only into DHT but also converting into large amounts of estrogen, which was causing the weight gain, body swelling, and joint issues running.

or

B) does it have something to do with my potassium levels? This is what I'm thinking it might be and @TubZy mentioning of minoxidil affecting the potassium pathway yesterday is what lead me down the all day research and hypothesis that it might be the reason. Additionally, I know when I brought up the water retention or fat in my original post, @gbolduev talked about setroids possibly affecting the potassium levels in the body. Who knows, I could not be understanding it at all - which is why I was looking for advice from the more knowledgeable members on this forum for advice. @TubZy @gbolduev @bruschi11 @Cdsnuts

To be clear, I am not looking to play with fire here - my intent in taking Minoxidil is not to neglect the fact that we have some sort of issue going on and trying to save hair. I have sought a couple different safer avenues for that. What I am trying to figure out is why my body cut all that fat overnight and how I could replicate or ensure this happens going forward. I feel so much better this morning and would like to find a safe way to maintain this, without having my dick not working. Would love to hear your thoughts on the situation.

Hey man... first no one gonna blame you for trying stuff. We all do it... so it's good to have the experience and post it so we know...

Do you know what those prescriptions were? I'm assuming corticosteroids like prednisone for inflammation...

As well as getting up a lot overnight to pee several times, did you sweat overnight with that 6lbs water loss?? I would say you likely didn't drop 6lbs of fat overnight but water bloat... any other supplements that you're taking (or not taking) ? For example, creatine will hold water... if you stopped it say Tuesday, it'd begin to release in a couple days like that... I'm not saying 6 lbs of water... but just checking nothing else was present that, combined, could be 6 total...

Gbolduev will definitely know more of the electrolyte / mineral aspect here than me, but potassium is usually lost in major water weight losses like that... diuretics have been known to drop potassium levels so they actually have a separate type that spares potassium...

in terms of hormones, two things to note here... test levels could be the same but FREE levels could be different with different herbs... stuff that lowers shbg for example could leave more FREE test and hence experience something that would feel like you're making MORE test but it's not necessarily the case... if you had high amounts of DHT & estrogen, they should oppose one another with a slight edge to DHT... so since you showed signs of higher DHT, I would say something else held the water rather than estrogen (or at least initially... )

So when you get some answers on electrolytes or what caused a diuretic effect on you, I would bet that would be the cause and effect of the symptom OVER estrogen .. but yes, estrogen will certainly make you hold water and bloat you.. when you press your finger on your skin, does the skin color change to white and then rush back to red? That's a test of water bloat...

@joekool Thanks for the response man! I really appreciate it. But I can't believe I didn't think of the water retention route. I've been having to pee like a race horse this morning too, and I thought it was all prostate related but maybe it is more the diuretic channel. Would minoxidil have any diuretic effect? That is the only thing different to my routine as of late. Not sure what to think of it all, but you brought up very interesting points.

The steroid I took was Prednisone. Again, all the bloating started after the steroid, I remember getting really weird calf cramps while also on those and it seemed like the pumping at the gym was never the same afterwards. That is when the weight gain started too. I was on high dose of these, like 40mg a day for a week, then winding down.

I believe it has to do with what you state above. PFS being an imbalance- minoxidil causing another imbalance.. lol something probably from minoxodil probably balances one thing for you and makes another thing worse.

I think this is similar to a lot of what we see in PFS where one thing effects another guy so much differently than the rest. But minoxidil is very strong to your body and I think it is for a lot of people. And @gbolduev will tell you that PFS is a potassium problem so the minoxidil just played around with that even more

Did you take prednisone orally or topically ?
After an eye surgery I also had to take a steroid, a cream applied on the eye before bed

I wonder if it had an effect on me, it was at the end of my accutane course and a few months before I crashed

If you took it orally it can definitely be a powerful substance, people were thinking of cycling it to reverse PFS along another thing, can't recall

@TubZy was about to, don't know if he did

A guy on another forum reported remission of PAS symptoms after a few days on it

@vicecaz Thanks for the response man. I took the steroid orally both times (2016 and 2018). I figured it might be a result of that because I was on such high doses.

Something even weirder is today is the best I have felt in a long time. You'd think after a "mini" crash, if I could even call it that from the minoxidil last night, I wouldn't feel any better; I just don't understand why. Mental clarity is 100%, I have no brain fog and I feel just so relaxed.

Minoxidil is a blood pressure med orally, don’t know if same applies topically.if blood pressure is lowered this raises aldosterone which then retains sodium, do you think this can be why you urinate a lot on it?

I’m honestly not sure what is causing it but I’m peeing like a race horse already and less bloated within 30 minutes of my second application.

You tagged me in this, so I'm going to give my two cents. I think it's a horrible idea to mess around with what you're messing around with. The reasons are long and varied. Good luck to you.

@M_Mitchell08 you said after the diuretic affect, you actually were feeling good... ok there's something here with regards to potassium...

If you're losing fluids & potassium , then if the body needs potassium it upregulates 3 beta HSD. (reason for the hairloss in the first place). Potassium makes the cell sensitive to thyroid hormone, without potassium in the cell, no cellular CO2, hairloss.

I'm more concerned that you're messing with potassium.. have you had any heart palpitations today ? That's all related... any cramps ?

This is a direct quote from @gbolduev from last ~Aug when he took the PFS world by storm... try to see if it coincides with what you're experiencing

Finasterid= progestin. ( same as depo provera, deca , nandrolone etc) Progestin binds progesterone receptors and blocks it , this increases number of progesterone receptors which downregulates 3 beta hsd, since that is the enzyme which converts pregnenolone into progesterone and also andro into testosterone. When you come off finasterid , anything that increases progesterone( testosterone, pregnenolone, dhea will make you feel worse since the progesterone receptors are upregulated greately. To downregulate 3 beta HSD, body pisses out zinc.

1) This is why if you go on progesterone and stay on it for a while, you will downregulate your progesterone receptors . You will feel bad on it at first, and then your will recover and then you need to take zinc. After progesterone crash, zinc will work. Before progesterone, zinc will keep castrating you even more.

2) Second way to downregulate progesterone receptors, is by blocking estrogen. NEVER use tamoxifen for this, it increases progestin activity.

You use Enclomiphene in smaller doses or Clomid in in high dosages 150mg 3 days, 100mg 4 days, 50mg 2 week, 25 , 4 weeks. The whole cure takes place when you start lowering the dosage, so taking clomid 50mg lets say for 5 month, does NOTHING( increases testosterone , decreases testosterone). Small doses of Clomid wont work, they are estrogenic.

From week 2 on clomid, you need to start taking zinc with vitamin E. Don't take zinc before that. Zinc needs to be taken since if not taken while you lower clomid it won't cure you.

Also you need to use Dostinex , half a pill , once a week. To let your steroid production go up.

3) progesterone receptors depend on potassium inside of the cell. So if potassium is really high in the cell, receptors get downregulated.

So anything that puts potassium in the cell will downregulate progesterone receptors. I guess potassium bicarbonate will downregulate the receptors, but then to start up the system you will need to take zinc with a lot of HCL to get potassium out of the cell to jump start 3 beta HSD

If body needs potassium it upregulates 3 beta HSD.( reason for the hairloss in the first place).Potassium makes the cell sensitive to thyroid hormone, without potassium in the cell, no cellular CO2, hairloss. Nothing to do with DHT.

Also you can get propecia symptoms from excessive masturbation. When you do that your zinc levels are kept low for while and your 3 beta HSD( zinc dependant and NAD) is low for a while. This upregulates your progesterone receptors almost identical to propecia and you crash with POIS syndrome.

This is why fasting helps this syndrome. fasting for 30-40 days will downregulate progesterone receptors since body will need tons of cortisol while you are fasting.

I hope this helps someone.

I would use Enclomiphene which is sold for research. Progesterone will put potassium inside of your cell, so you will need to control it with an HCL . otherwise you wont start 3 beta HSD later on. So it is better to stimulate estrogen receptors so when you quit clomid like substance it will automatically tank your potassium in your cell.

1) For me fasting for 40 days would be easiest
2) Enclomiphene with dosinex protocol
3) 20-50 mg progesterone short term(0r even more short term) it will cause you to crash, after which you take zinc( 20mg) and NAD

@joekool to follow up on your question yesterday, whether I felt any heart palpatations or cramps - I did not. To be honest, the last time I had cramps was when I was on that high dose steroid and felt like something got screwed up then. I had double calf cramps one night (again back in December) and that is when I noticed the water retention was beginning (legs rubbing together so much that the hair is missing)

I have pred, I just never took it, I don't have much interest with it now anyways given my hair test and it seems dexa is the better option over pred anyways.

It was talked about in this thread if you guys want to check it out

PFS and immune connection

I had some recent lab work done and my AST and ALT are high: 177 and 71, respectively. Could this be causing some of the issues I am experiencing? Water weight, etc.

Of course it can. Something is causing that man. That should not be for a healthy young man.

I'd just have the ARL/TEI done asap. Along with messing around with betaine HCL, amino acid protocols.

I know you are living an @Cdsnuts type recovey life right now so you're doing things the right way for certain. But you can totally add in the betaine without issue- then mess around with zinc finger amino acids, GCU aminos while working with ARL/TEI mineral balance. You'll be 100% in no time man! You're smart, you'll figure this out.

I just wanted to add my two cents on minoxidil. I'm a pssd sufferer, female. I tried minoxidil last week once, long story. I noticed my weight dropped about 4 lbs the next day, and felt for the following two days like my old self. Nothing can usually budge my weight. I don't want to try it again as I'm scared of making problems worse in the long run. But there is definitely something to this.

Glad I am not the only one! I think it has something to do with the electrolyte imbalance, or a mechanism of the potassium channel - which through my research doesn't seem to necessarily mess with potassium at all. I just completed a hair analysis test and am waiting for the results. It is so sad, minoxidil definitely made me feel like my old self, but like you I feel like it is just a bandaid and not a solution and ultimately would lead to worse messes.

Also, I took some magnesium carbonate citrate last night, as I hadn't passed bowels in about 4 days (believe this was a lingering side effect of minoxidil usage) and i have dropped 7 lbs in the last day. I really am curious to see what my hair test reveals.
