I have never done a 23 and me but I have read about it and other genetic testing from a company called GENELD
https://www.admdiag.com/
Actually I just tried getting a job with GENELD recently. It's kinda of a shady idea but this company hires people "who have relationships with doctor officers" to ask the lead physician of the office if they would be willing to "prescribe" the companies genetic testing kits to their patients. The sales pitch was that GENELD claims to have "partnered" with health insurance companies who have agreed to cover the cost of the genetic testing kits because in the long run investing money now to prevent certain diseases will be cheeper than paying to treat them later. This specific sales pitch went along with their kits that test for genetic predisposition to certain types of cancers. The idea being that if you know you are genetically predisposed to lets sale colon cancer who would not only do screening tests earlier in life to catch it early but you would live healthier to decrease chances of getting it.
It seemed like a cool job because GENELD hires independent contractors who would earn commission off of each test kit prescribed at the contract (Dr, Office) that you set up and you could try to score contracts with as many Dr. Officers as possible being your own boss combined with the income potential because you could in theory travel around the country and get as many contracts as you could. Being on disability and all I have time to do something like this. So I made brochures and went to a few doctor offices and LMFAO it caused complete havoc. One doctor threatened to call the police on me, one doctor laughed in my face and it was really just pretty funny seeing their reactions. I went to my primary care doctor who did have a serious conversation with me about it and what he said was it would be medical malpractice for me to prescribe "a genetic testing" kit that is not FDA approved and that I did not learn in medical school that the results would be accurate. He could not explain though why the results would be inaccurate simply because its not FDA approved and because he did not learn in medical school 15 years ago before these tests were even around why they are not accurate.
I agree with your point about not wanting your genetic info out their in the hands of 23 and me. There is an easy and practical solution though and it's exactly what I will do if I have one of these tests done. Give the company a fake profile, fake name fake everything and pay with a gift card that also has fake info attached to it. This way 23 and me will have your DNA in their date base but attached to a fake person. What now? the info is useless what are they going to do with it....
Anyway, why are you saying that 23 and me tests are not accurate ? I am not arguing it's just a lot of people say this and I have never received an answer as to why there is any creditable reason to question the results. Also I am anti establishment as it gets. So I understand how much money is invested into ensuring that the government would do everything in their power to not allow a genetic testing kit from GENELD to get FDA approved as a screening test knowing how much money their special interest groups donate into our political system who profit off of treating the cancers in more advanced stages rather than catching them early.
