I think finasteride definitely stops it's own metaboism. I remember the 3 times I did some experiments with it I felt different for like weeks. Or the breakdown is extremely slow.
Also I found the study that shows finasteride skews body more towards a ratio that is also prevalent in homosexuals:
Analyses of 24-hour specimens of urine from healthy adult males for androsterone and etiocholanolone produced values which, when calculated as discriminant scores, discriminated between heterosexual and exclusively homosexual individuals. This confirms a previous study. No significant differences...

It blocks 5α-reductase (↓ androsterone) and diverts more testosterone into the 5β-reductase pathway (↑ etiocholanolone). (I got this from X)
Now does it mean this automatically makes you gay? Probably not. Still interesting because most people I have seen use finasteride they become more feminine and dare say a bit flamboyant. Especially long term usage. I talked to a guy on another forum non-related to health or hair and he was on it and he had massive mental issues. But funny like most people on finasteride he denied it all and it was just because of his life circumstances.
Of course you can have depression. I also have it sometimes (low mood) but the way he explained it was very much like what PFS people experience except not as extreme. Detachment, zero enjoyment, low libido, etc.
