Improved antioxidative protection in winter swimmers

Adaptation to oxidative stress is an improved ability to resist the damaging effects of reactive oxygen species, resulting from pre-exposure to a lower dose. Changes in uric acid and glutathione levels during ice-bathing suggest that the intensive voluntary short-term cold exposure of winter swimming produces oxidative stress. We investigated whether the repeated oxidative stress in winter swimmers results in improved antioxidative adaptation. We obtained venous blood samples from winter swimmers and determined important components of the antioxidative defense system in the erythrocytes or blood plasma: reduced and oxidized glutathione (GSH and GSSG), and the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and catalase (Cat). The control group consisted of healthy people who had never participated in winter swimming. The baseline concentration of GSH and the activities of erythrocytic SOD and Cat, were higher in winter swimmers. We interpret this as an adaptative response to repeated oxidative stress, and postulate it as a new basic molecular mechanism of increased tolerance to environmental stress.

PS. I did not read the full study. Just found it randomly reading some stuff.

Also on HEAT:

Sauna bathing reduces the risk of stroke in Finnish men and women

It seems INTERMETTENT stress is healthy. For example intermettent fasting, sauna (HOT), excercise, cold showers (COLD), etc.

I would also imagine small amounts of toxins from foods (from plants for example) are healthy and make the body stronger.

Yeah both sides have their benefits. Actually contrast showers are the best forces the body to adapt even better

I would also note that doing cold showers has virtually stopped my sweating as in like I don't really sweat anymore which is good as I would sweat way more during PFS like too much I assume dude to adrenaline and GABA being screwed up. If I take a hot shower I sweat like a mofo all throughout the day way more

Yeah, I have been doing cold showers for years and rarely sweat. It takes a really hot summer day outside doing activity to get me to sweat these days.

Yes that's true in my experience as well. I sweat a lot from eating spicy or citrusy foods. After cold showers that effect is reduced during the following day.

Hmm I don't notice that. I sweat a lot lately even with the cold showers. When it is a bit sunny outside I sweat.

how long have you been doing it? took me about two weeks to really notice however I'm starting to adapt to it more now, my shower doesnt get any colder, need something like an ice bath. I still get the effect it is just not as strong anymore I'm assuming since my body is adapting

Months now haha.

I think my shower is very cold at the moment. In the winter it was insane cold. I also swam in the sea last year in the winter. I was sick for 2 weeks. First time I ever got sick in PFS.

I think that I still have to get better at writing, or that some could get more from Reading what I wrote about our nervous system!

Just cold water on the face is known to actívate the vagus nerve, well to put you towards the parasym state.

Then forget about the Word STRESS sometimes, and replace it by action, heat, acceleration, sym activation….

The cold Will stimulate the body, and stimulate the reaction of sending heat. So it puts you in movement and wakes you up.

Then, you all have to see for yourself, the intensity that is low enough to cause the result you want, and stay there! Most people Will overdo, and this is not ok for our goals, not at all. We want the body to come back to its ability to pendulate from sym to parasym states. We want to increase pendulation at a slow path, decided by the body, so that the pendulum stays a pendulum… Those objects are self-transforming…. usually into boomrangs!

i am in a wim hof method group, and gosh I was sick from Reading people going over-threashold and not listening to warnings! And others citing THEIR own example, as if eveyrbody was the same! i turned off comments…

In the morning, that is ok to do the breathing exercise in bed before going to the shower while still warm from bed. You can use warm water first, and then try the cold. I do not do long, and only arms and legs, because I cannot do the whole body, that is still too much for me. i live in a subtropical oceanic area, and it deprived me from my previous ability to stand variations!

Same for the breathing, no over-do... And it has a breath hold, so that you can make go down the sym activation after the hyperventilation. the goal is the same, stimulate pendulation between action and relaxation.

This is what Will help to stand the activations and the fatigue from the program or detox etc. But we all have to start from where we are and try to go the turtle way! And the rabbit? Just eat it…
