If it's about the state of mind, Elliot Hulse is definitely right. In fact, I've tried for ages to get more into that exact state he describes, as I have way too much input all the time and can't just relax or focus, unless I'm deeply ingrained in one certain activity such as sports or video games. I agree that this Aussie kid is definitely not in the alpha state of mind though, he's just carefree and rebellious. Which is probably a lot better than the exact opposite (overly worried and obedient), which many people are nowadays, but that alone doesn't make you an alpha IMO.
Still, many of the aggressive guys Helen would describe as Beta mostly because of them being actually too aggressive and maybe more ungrounded, can just through either their superior strength and intimidation or even just through sheer intellectual capabilities degrade those people who are in the alpha state of mind. Or even just through skill in certain areas in general. Of course that's not advisable if its your boss as you probably want to keep your job. So maybe an alpha male could best be described as one leaning closest to that alpha mindset while being able to back that up with competence in strength but also intellect. If one is really strong, witty and usually calm, but easier to 'trigger' than others or even if he's just harassing people for no reason, does that really make him less of an alpha? Depends on the definition I guess, but i wouldn't say so.
I don't think you can generalize that much to be honest. There's some crazy people who are incredibly strong. They are probably not balanced and yet will kick the ass of most people. When Hulse mentions Russell Brand, do you really think that guy is any strong? He will get smashed by most people, no matter if they're in an alpha mindset or a beta one or whatever. Many unbalanced people have very good endurance and regeneration and don't tire. Probably running on adrenaline. I'm one of them, I can run as much as I want even when untrained. And that was the point I was trying to make, that I don't think it's as simple to say alpha mindset = alpha = being competitive in everything. There's more to that.
But then what is an alpha male in your definition? Would you agree that people like Russell Brand are alphas? What about my example earlier: a guy who's usually calm, very strong, but likes to bully people for example or freaks out too easily. Does that mean he's not an alpha, thus physically weaker than alphas? I don't agree with you at all on this one. A balanced person and alpha are two different things, just like being balanced and strong are different things. Being balanced is advantageous for everything, but that doesn't mean it's as simple to say that being balanced makes you stronger than others. Come on, that's ridiculous.
